Jennifer BurchVeterinary Nurse

How did you arrive at your current position? What path brought you here?

I worked with Dr. Jodi at a previous local clinic. When she called me to say she was opening her own practice at Harmony Animal Hospital NC I jumped at the chance to join her and help.  I never looked back!

What are you known for professionally? What do you have a knack for?

Venipuncture, IV catheters, problem solving.  As the lead tech, a big part of my job involves solving problems and coming up with solutions on a daily basis. I enjoy helping my coworkers and teaching them new ways to do things.  I am also really good at getting blood and urine samples, as well as placing IV catheters in our very sick or difficult patients.

What are you most passionate about professionally?  What excites you most about your work and the contribution you can make?

I’m passionate about patient comfort, especially in our older pets.  Nothing is more rewarding to me than keeping our pets comfortable as they get older, and we have so many options available now from medications to laser therapy to acupuncture and more.  Dental care is also a big part of that.  Just because our pets get older doesn’t mean they deserve less care – if anything they need more care.

Where can we find you when you’re not working? What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend or a Sunday afternoon?

You’ll find me spending time with my family (husband, James and 2 kids, Christopher and Savannah) and fur kids (3 dogs, 3 cats).  We enjoy camping and hiking, especially weekend trips to the mountains.  I also do a lot of home improvement projects and gardening work.  Our current summer project is building a fort with the kids.

How long have you been doing what you do?

I’ve been doing this since graduating from college in 2001.  I graduated NCSU with a BS in Animal Science and had been working at a clinic during college as a receptionist.  After graduation, I was hired full-time and started training as a tech.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Raleigh and have never left the surrounding area.  I love it here!

Any volunteer activities you’re crazy about? Are there any nonprofits you love, & why?

Animal rescue organizations, especially those who pull from high kill shelters, are heroes in my book.  Many of them go above and beyond to save as many animal lives as they can.
