In addition, we offer “Furminater” treatments to help reduce excessive shedding, ideally this should be continued by you at home on a regular basis to keep the shedding to a minimum. We also offer lion cuts for cats to help reduce matting, shedding, and vomiting up hairballs. Whether you are looking for one-time help or regular treatment for an ongoing issue, give us a call so we can discuss your options.
If you have a pet that’s difficult to handle, bringing him to the clinic for a dog or cat bath, or dip, might be a better idea than trying to do this at home. Our staff is trained in the care and handling of animals, so they’ll know what to do to ensure your pet is safe and benefits from the bath as much as possible. On occasion, we may need to administer a light sedative or anti-anxiety medication to aid your pet in relaxing and allowing a less stressful, more successful bath experience. Of course, this will only be done with your full knowledge and consent.
Medicated baths can help treat a number of skin problems, but they’re only effective if done properly. For example, many types of medicated baths require massaging the skin and leaving the product on the skin for at least 15 minutes before rinsing so it works properly to treat the inflammation and/or infection of the skin.
If you don’t have the right setup or have a pet that won’t cooperate, doing this on your own, at home, can be downright impossible. This is where we come in.
We offer different medicated baths to address special skin conditions, including:
- Chlorhexidine and Miconazole baths to help with skin yeast and bacterial overgrowth. These baths help clean yeast and bacteria off the skin and also remove crusts, scabs, and flaky skin, as well as, helps reduce itchiness and odor.
- Benzoyl peroxide baths to treat bacterial skin infections, as well as, excess skin oil for those really greasy dogs. This also helps reduce odor related to excessive oil production.
- Anti-itch topical hydrocortisone or steroid containing shampoos for baths to ease itchy, flaky skin. This is great for pets with allergies or dandruff.
We can also offer oatmeal baths to help with itchy skin. Mild oatmeal shampoos can be used on a regular basis, at home. Or we can offer stronger medicated shampoos that contain oatmeal as one of the ingredients. These are a good choice for extreme itchiness – for example, to help a pet that came in contact with poison oak or with some sort of allergy or skin reaction.
Lime Sulfur Dips
Lime sulfur dips are special baths given to pets to help with a number of skin issues. The dips have antimicrobial and anti-parasitic properties, so they can ease the itchiness, irritation and inflammation caused by demodectic and sarcoptic mange. The dips are also used for pets suffering from ringworm and other types of skin fungus and parasites.
Although you can buy lime sulfur dips for home use, the chemicals in the dip are highly irritating and can be dangerous if they come in contact with eyes and mucus membranes of you or your pet. In addition, these baths should only be given in well-ventilated areas as they have a strong sulfur (rotten egg) smell and should be administered while wearing a surgical mask and gloves.
If your pet has no need for medicated baths but you would still like help with shampooing, we can also help. We can offer baths using specific shampoos to fit your pet’s skin type and coat. For example, dogs with a heavy undercoat might benefit from a bath using a degreasing shampoo. These help remove excess oil and reduce shedding.
For pets with long hair, we offer conditioning baths. These come with added conditioner to ensure tangle-free, shiny hair. Special baths to deal with very dirty or greasy skin, dry skin or certain coat colors are also available.
If your pet has a specific need regarding baths and hair and coat care, let us know to see how we can help you.
